An Angel Is Love performed by The Bob Crewe Generation Orchestra
| |
| | : Its hard to pick just one track off an LP thats this good. It took me ten years to track down my copy, and I had to pay full collectors price for it, but it was worth every penny.
By the way, I don't think thats Bob singing, is it? He sings on one of his other LP's and its not too, er, memorable. : According to the liner notes, "Bob Crew was persuaded by producer Dino de Laurentiis to sing on the wonderful end cue, 'An Angel is Love'."
But I haven't listened to his other songs, so I can't say it's definitely his voice, though... : Liner notes, blimey. Top song even so. : truly great song. but i have to say, that i like the theme tune more. but it's maybe because i only listen to it while watching the intro with jane fonda undressing. best intro scene of a movie ever! and jane is supersexy, isn't she?!
candy!! : Does anyone know where could download mp3s of the Babarella soundtrack? Any other recomendations welcome. : It's in print on Harkit Records. Here's one of many places you can buy it: http://www.moviegrooves.com/shop/barbarella.htm. : probably my favourite soundtrack ever. has to agree with heinmukk though, the title tune is better. the version in the actual movie is a bit different from the soundtrack version, probably worth ripping from the dvd if you can get your hands on it. I also love the track "fight in flight", it probably has one of the coolest combos of funk guitars and string arrangements there is.... theres a rerelease of the album with some bonus tracks by the young lovers out, (some pretty standard easy listening cover versions of existing tracks, nice if you're a completist though.) dont remember wich label its on though.

Casino Royale performed by 18th Century Corporation
| | : I found the entire "Bacharach Baroque" album superb!
The "baroque" is not overdone. The arrangements are very pleasing - better than most of the hundreds of instrumental takes on Bacharach that surfaced in the 60's and early 70's. So where can I find more by the ephemeral "18th Century Corporation"?

Frances and Her Friends performed by Frances Faye
| |
| | : Fantastic to see a Frances Faye recommendation here. I'm a huge, huge fan of her work, although oddly enough I only picked up 'Caught in the act' quite recently. Have you heard the album she did with Russ Garcia on Verve - 'In Frenzy'? Amazing stuff - wild bongo-ridden, brassy, dramatic takes on mostly Latin standards. An incredible performer - I wish I'd been around to catch one of her performances! : Frenzy is one of Faye's best studio albums. Garcia really brings out Faye's unique sound by contrasting it with such strong Latin flavor. I don't know anything else that sounds like it. I am glad you found "Caught in the Act" that is my favorite Faye. Her later concerts were even more wild.

The Sandpipers' version on "Canto Morricone Vol." is equally nice. : I just wanted to recommend ‘The Sound Spectrum’ which this is on. I’ve had a copy of years but have only just realised that it’s essential listening - if you like this sort of thing, probably drive you mad otherwise. : Yes, it\'s a cracking compilation. It\'s so well done that if you listen to the tracks out of context (e.g. on the original LPs), they don\'t sound as thrilling as they do on this mix!

It’s Cool Not To Care performed by Mark and the No-Marks
| |
| | : This would be your band perhaps?
I think I recognise the attempt to write about ones own music. : good guess, but not my band no. i'm much too young. just used know a couple of No-Marks. local heroes/weirdos about town. they were very resentful of the whole experience, so i thought i'd give them their small dues. : Was this the same Mark from 'Mark and the Monsters' infamy?
I saw them once, in a mirror. Their sound made me want to pull my brain out through my ears and beat myself about the head with it.
Shame, really, they looked really mad. : No, Gnasher, what you see in a mirror is a very troubled and confused soul, who needs alot of care and attention. Unfortunately musicaltaste.com is not the place. : Be nice!

Julia performed by Eurythmics
| |
| | : A fantastic track. It definitely rises above a lot of other songs of the period, even though it does feature an extremely cheesy guitar solo. And I still have the 12 inch of it that you sold me in 1987! : Hold onto that 12"... a lot of great work was done in rock and pop during the 1980s. Rather like 1960s British housing, much of it has yet to reach classic status, but for some of it at least, its time will surely come!

Love Theme performed by Vangelis
| | : This is one of the best instrumental synth soundtrack track ever made, Vangelis is a genius! The pads / strings and the saxophone are so incredibly relaxed it feels like you are floating in space. My other favourite song from the Blade Runner soundtrack is 'Blade Runner Blues', it's also amazing! : Forgot to mention there is a variation of this song on the Blade Runner Bootleg by Esper called 'Thinking of Rachel', which is a muffled warm analog synth piece.

Love’s Theme performed by the Love Unlimited Orchestra
| |
| | : Hey! There's a great vocal version of this tune on one of the "Love Unlimited" vocal records Barry produced with a trio of ladies. It's on the album "In Heat" (20th Century T-443 1974). It just got reissued on CD. It's kinda fun hearing lyrics to a song that's so well remembered as an instrumental!

Metti Una Sera A Cena performed by Milva
| | : I love this song. Very chi-chi sixties sounding, refreshing as a glass of lemonade. : There are several versions of "Metti",besides the original s/track lp,there is an entire lp of other versions available...the live Piero Piccioni conducted version feat. Edda Dell'Orso is fantastic. : Yeah, the Piccioni version is a crescending epic, makes the hair on my neck raise when i'm in the right mood. What is that "entire LP of other versions" you were referring to ? Is it coincidentally called "Metti una sera a cena grande" ? And where did you get it ? : Yeah, that's the lp I meant,I search blogger and other places for music,I got the Piccioni vers. off Limewire (useful for finding obscure stuff and things you might not buy) but I found a link to the entire lp,here it is:http://community.livejournal.com/relaxmusic/792781.html just right click on each song to d/load as the "vip link" doesn't work."Blogger" is a v.good place to search for morricone,if you are a fan and want anymore links to d/loads,feel free to email me at [email protected]. and I'll steer you in the right direction. : Thanks for offering some advice and help, i find this trend in posting interesting stuff on highly specialized blogs very nice, also the possibility of searching for this stuff via Blogger. As for "Metti una sera a cena grande", it's very interesting for me where this album pops up on the net, because this was, in fact, compiled by me a year ago or so :-D : You compiled it?Wow,that's amazing!I guess you work for a record company?Yes,if the internet is great for one thing alone it's the access to music you would otherwise not hear.I don't really agree with people posting full albums they have just ripped from a new cd (an odd track or clip is fine) but for out of print or obscure vinyl these blogs are ideal. It keeps the music alive for the future which is what the composers would want most I think. : No, i don't work for a record company, i just enjoy doing compilations of stuff i really love and spread it if i find others might like it too, like with this one. I fully agree with you that blogs should be limited too out-of-print or vinyl stuff. But i sincerly hope that one day record companies open their vaults and put their entire catalogue online so people don't have to search the web for rare gems that otherwise would completely vanish, i have the feeling though that this won't ever happen... : I came across a samba record morricone did with the singer chico buarque, maybe you've heard it,there are a few very unusual songs on it,here is the link:http://balacobaco2.blogspot.com/2006/03/chico-buarque-de-hollanda-discografia.html : other morricone i discovered,2 great scores for "roma come chicago" and "una breve stagione",not great sound quality but both feature some great tracks that I had not heard before.

Out of this World performed by Tony Hatch
| | : For some reason my parents acquired 2 mint copies of this on 7. Needless to say they didn't keep 'em long, heh, heh. Its a nice enough track, don't I remember some flute in there. but Tony was also the composer of some great early 60's pop, he did a number of LP's with Petula Clark, including the hits 'Downtown' and 'Don't sleep in the Subway' written with Jackie Trent (I think- Oh names, names, names). So to only remember him for Neighbours is cruel (and don't forget one variant of the Crossroads theme was recorded by paul Macartney and Wings, bet that isn't on the greates hits LP). : totally; I think Tony's a genius; don't get me wrong! 'I know a place' and 'I couldn't live without your love' are two other great pop songs he was responsible for...

| | : hey, bossa rio!! i have their "alegria!" lp on blue thumb, which was also produced by sergio mendes. really great covers of "spinning wheel", "blackbird", "girl talk", and a few more jorge ben tunes. : ...including the ben song "zazueira", which, coincidentally, i have recommended astrud gilberto & stanley turrentine's version of! : I was interested to note that the bass line from Jorge Ben's Saiupa as played by Bossa Rio (1969)(listen for break after long chorus) sounds remarkably like Gordon Gano's "Gone Daddy Gone" (1980). Is there any aknowledgement from GG on the Violent Femmes album?

| | : Oh yeah, this is one of the creepiest tracks ever recorded with it's hypnotically repetitive style building up slowly in the first half and then turning into a faster paced prog-rockish second half with a kind of gothic sounding, massive organ and furious synths. : I also forgot the chanting. And theres some kind of bassy dijeridoo thing going on in there too.

The Ambushers performed by Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart
| | : Super underrated songwriting duo. Fab stuff! Also check out their exellent LP "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight?",a big hit for them, but the whole record is really solid! From what i've read, these guys are virtuosos, and did all their own arranging as well as guitar & keys! Very fun stuff... : I just listened to this track (off their Anthology collection), and frankly it just sounds immature. For me the outstanding track by Boyce & Hart has to be "Alice Long", with its kitchen-sink production style; if I had to list my favourite 10 songs of all time I'm sure it would be right in there! : i think immaturity is the a-number-one thing these cats had going for them...i mean, they wrote songs for paul revere & the raiders and the monkees for cryin' out loud! granted, this isn't my fave b&h tune (that title probably goes to "p.o. box 9847", but i digress) but it's good. not everything has to be of pet sounds calibre, after all.

The Creator Has A Master Plan performed by Pharaoh Sanders
| |
| | : The only Pharoah Saunders I've heard is on Alice Coltrane's "Journey to Satchinanda" (Scuse the poor spelling) which is remarkable. Not only is the playing remarkable, but so is the fact I love it so much, considering it's not only a saxaophone, but it's also in the 'too many notes' style of Jazz. But Saunders playing just seems to float around on top of everything else. Beautiful stuff.
but anyway, what I really wanted to know was, is he really a Yorkshireman? (Ey up!?) Blimey.
: yes, it's a little known pharoah fact, he was born in a little village just outside Barnsley. : Thembi is another fine record for him as well.

The Detectives performed by Alan Tew
| | : This is a variation of one of the tracks off the "Hanged man" Soundtrack. There is also a third version I believe on a library record soemwhere. Anyway, its well worth tracking the Hanged Man down, its been re-issued by DC recordings and on bootleg (vinyl and cd). The original on contour can be expensive. I think moviegrooves have the re-issues. : You're right n-jeff there are a variation of it on the 'Hanged Man' soundtrack avaiable at Moviegroovies.co.uk. I also recognize the track 'Smokey Joe the Dreamer', not sure from where - but it might have been on one of the 'Dusty Fingers' compilations? : Tew was one of many UK composers who also did shedloads of Library music, so it could have been anywhere, TV, Film, another LP.
For lots of information on the UK Lounge/ Library/ Collecting thing have a look around www.vinylvulture.co.uk. : There are a shitload of variations and other builds on the same theme on a De Wolfe compilation called "Alan Tew - Drama Suite Part 1". I think that's the library record you are thinking of n-jeff.

The Girls' Song performed by The Fifth Dimension
| | : Alright! I was gonna recommend this one too. This song illustrates perfectly the CA sound that Webb & Bacharach were crafting. Some people mistake this for a B.B. tune, and it's no wonder...
"Magic Garden" is a great album to seek out by this group, if you've been afraid before.I also like "Requiem : 820 Latham" & "Paper Cup". : I LOVE the "Magic Garden" album...I have it on vinyl, but I was fortunate enough to to get it on CD when it was released-it's now out of print. The album is a Jimmy Webb/Fifth Dimension classic. The only thing holding it back from perfection is a Las Vegas-y cover of the Beatles' "Ticket to Ride" that sounds out of place with the other material, all of which was written by Webb. But that's OK, a lot of great albums have one duff track!
I like the Fifth Dimension's early material, "Magic Garden" is their second album, but I also like their first and third LP's. Unfortunately, in later years they became too "show-biz" sounding, which causes some people to overlook all of their material.
