A view from her room  performed by Week end  1982
Recommended by whoops [profile]

After the split of the Young Marble Giants, Alison Statton dreamed herself as Helen Merill and ended up to be the most convincing Astrud Gilberto impersonator of the eighties. A view from her room begins as a bossa and ends in a blast of percussions.
One of the true masterpiece of the first half of this decade ans it's a shame that it is not currently available.

from La varit by Week end (Rough trade)

13 Jul 02 ·delicado: By coincidence, I bought this record on Monday in a charity shop in England. I like it very much. Alison Statton and Spike toured England about 6 years ago and were excellent.
purple haze  performed by Johnny Jones & The King Casuals
Recommended by djfreshmoney [profile]

cool old R&B version of purple haze. The singer doesn't get the lyrics quite right, but there's a lot of soul and horns on this track.

available on CD - Northern Soul Dancefloor Classics 1 (Deep Beats)

Brassneck  performed by The Wedding Present  1989
Recommended by lingereffect [profile]

I'm a complete sucker for jangly guitar, and thus The Wedding Present's back catalogue is a treasure trove for me. A great breakup song from a band with more than their fair share, "Brassneck" is available in two versions on the reissue of _Bizarro_ - the LP version and the single version (the latter of which was recorded by Steve Albini and is many people's favourite, but not mine). It isn't their fastest song, but the speedy, tendonitis-inducing guitar strum still leaves me slack-jawed.

from Bizarro (RCA), available on CD (Manifesto)

16 Jun 02 ·delicado: I also prefer the album version. Oddly enough I was playing the guitar in that fast-strummed jangly style this very evening... I think the George Best album is my favorite.
Tempura  performed by Di Maggio  2002

I don't know much about the French duo Di Maggio, but this is a great track. I guess this sounds a lot like that other French duo, Air, but with a more pronounced Morricone influence. Very nice regardless...

13 Jul 02 ·delicado: Great sound; is the whole album this good?
Make Your Own Kind Of Music  performed by Cass Elliot (a.k.a. Mama Cass)  1969
Recommended by FlyingDutchman1971 [profile]

A true anthem to self-love. Cass' beautiful voice proudly affirms that you have to be yourself and not worry about what anyone else thinks. She deserved more appreciation than she got during her short life and this song strikes me as quite autobiographical.

from Make Your Own Kind Of Music (Dunhill 50071)
available on CD - Dream A Little Dream: the Cass Elliot Collection (MCAD 11523)

29 Oct 02 ·delicado: yeah, I love this track. She sings in a very sincere and rousing way.
12 Jul 03 ·JangleBabe: If my childhood memories serve, this was the theme song of Cass's short-lived variety show back in the '70s.
