Ride On  performed by Ebony Jam  1970

A thoroughly wild hard funk track with some great congas...this came out on the same tiny label that Bing Crosby recorded for in his final years, and it couldn't be much more diametrically opposed! I don't have any info at all about this band or their other releases, so if you do, please let me know!

from the single Ride On (Amos)

Over  performed by Alpha  1998
Composed by Dingley-Jenks

Terrific downbeat with a very sparse feel. Great soundtrack-inspired piece of moody Bristol trip-hop, with nods to Barry Adamson and Jimmy Webb.

from Pepper: Remixes & Rarities (EP), available on CD (Melankolic)

Big White Cloud  performed by John Cale  1970
Composed by Cale

A superb song from Cale's first solo LP after leaving the Velvet Underground. Very melodic, lushly orchestrated and sophisticated, an absolutely impeccably-crafted pop song. I really love the echo effect on the whole thing, coupled with Cale's ultra-fluid viola playing. A great album from start to finish, actually.

from Vintage Violence, available on CD (Columbia)

28 Feb 02 ·G400 Custom: Also check out 'Gideon's Bible' from this album. Soothingly poppy, but with a fantastic, soaring chorus - not usually one of Cale's strengths.
Goin' Home  performed by Ike Quebec  1962
Composed by Dvorak

Beautiful samba, with great mellow sax playing from one of the masters of the Coleman Hawkins-influenced tenor on his final album. The counterpoint of Kenny Burrell's guitar and Garvin Masseaux's gentle percussion with Quebec's long warm tones really make this track.

from Soul Samba, available on CD (Blue Note)

Made in France  performed by France Gall  1967
Composed by Datin-Vidalin

Is it just me, or do the French really have an inferiority complex? Terrifically silly French girlie-pop with great '60s lyrics comparing all the things that are "Made in England" (Mary Quant, the Salvation Army) with all the things that are "Made in France (not made in England)" (Camembert, Charles Aznavour).

from 1968, available on CD ()

09 Feb 04 ·unathanthium: Yes indeed.Fabulous song.Still waiting for St.Etienne to do Made in England,an answer to this sixties gem,but let's face it we haven't much to crow about in England.Tony Blair,Margaret Thatcher,The Dome,J.K.Rowling.I think you get my point.
