Scottish Pop  performed by Spearmint  2001

Any song which namechecks Bobby Gillespie and Stuart Murdoch is all right with me. A beautiful, sweet pop song with the choice lyric "when I'm with you it's like Scottish Pop". Gorgeous.

from A Different Lifetime, available on CD (hitBACK)

Don't look down  performed by Divine Comedy  1996

An outrageously ambitious number by a 24-year old - an opening awash with horns, before a ridiculous set of lyrics in which Neil goes up in a big wheel with his girl, only to meet God at the top of the revolution, whereupon he tries to argue with him. Neil is on sparkling form, crying with disgust

and the couple in the car above
well I suppose they think that we're in love

Before continuing (his eye must ache with all this winking)...

Then without warning, as we approach the top
The wheel that turns us all comes to a sudden stop

This song also has the greatest cliffhanger ending in rock. Go and listen - you'd be crazy not to. THe rest of this album is brilliant too.

from Promenade (Setanta SETCD013)

Talk Show Host  performed by Radiohead  1996

Super-dark-sexy...This song is an honest portrayal of the paradoxes involved with desire; happy/sad, pleasure/pain, love/hate...etc. I find it terribly gloomy yet wonderfully uplifting at the same time. Just beautiful.

available on CD - Street Spirit (Fade Out) EP

Golden Hours  performed by Brian Eno  1975

Brian Eno on guitar, percussion, organs and piano and John Cale on viola. When you put geniuses like these two together, something brilliant is bound to happen. In this case, it's this song. This one gets me every time.

from Another Green World

28 Feb 02 ·G400 Custom: Talking of Eno and Cale, 'Wrong Way Up', the LP they released together in 1990, is intermittently excellent. Both of them indulge their poppier side, particularly on 'Lay My Love'.
Brilliant Trees  performed by David Sylvian  1984

Beautiful and atmospheric music, superbly recorded. Intensely poetic lyrics. What an incredible advance this represents from his work with the band Japan! Superb synth voices from longtime collaborator Ruichi Sakamoto sound a searching chord sequence over which a gorgeous, heavily treated trumpet solo comes in and out. Sylvian's voice is richly expressive.

from Brilliant Trees, available on CD

22 Dec 04 ·ronin: Bought album of same name due to tracks "Red Guitar" and "Pulling Punches" getting major airplay on DC radio at time. Was not disappointed! Moody and nice bass lines! Sylvian's voice is ... unusual.
