Sandmen - Thelma (Fallout mix)  performed by DIY  1993
Recommended by alkine [profile]

well there isn't much to say, it's a drum machine and someone saying 'celebrate life'. i remember this lp from 8 years ago, and probably we were wasted, but it was the most played vinyl in the flat. found without knowing who or why, and now thanks to www.bleep.com, i found it again. not much happens until 3'40, and then, in the right mood, you realise why music is so great, some dude with a drum machine and a cheesy hook, manages to encapsulate joy in sound.

from Strictly 4 Groovers (Warp WARP18)

flim  performed by aphex twin
Recommended by VataMcPortaltech [profile]

flim is the best aphex twin song it reminds me of a thistle blowing through a playground. i'm the thistle going through monkey bars.i've heard it coming home from so many raves its the subtlest most child like song...

available on CD - richard d james album

space age lullaby  performed by jackie lee  1972
Recommended by unathanthium [profile]

ICI records present a promotional tune for Savlon Babycare. One for astronauts who are missing their newborns.Jackie Lee whispers to a sleeping infant as
an Hawaiian guitar gently guides sleeping child to distant imaginary galaxies, presumably peopled by grass-skirted aliens.More space commodity than Space Oddity, but all the more charming for that.

She’s Dead  performed by Pulp  1992

A particularly gloomily atmospheric track which pre-dates the band's chart success by only a year or so. I find the chorus to be the band's catchiest of all, but nevertheless haven't entirely worked out why I find the song as a whole to be so absorbing.

from Separations, available on CD

Everybody’s Got to learn Sometime  performed by The Korgis  1979
Recommended by Mike [profile]

An absolute classic of British pop. Beautiful song whose verses and chorus each use original and stunningly effective chord sequences. The verse's melody line is exceptionally fine, as is the atmospheric production.

from Dumb Waiters (Rialto)
available on CD - Don't Look Back - the very best of the Korgis (Castle)
