lost in the supermarket  performed by the clash  1979
Recommended by shaka_klaus [profile]

first: the whole london calling lp is a great record, a diverse masterpiece. this song reminds me of the flaming groovies 'shake some action' but it has it's own sound and the lyrics are great too.

from london calling (cbs clash 3), available on CD

I've Seen To Dream  performed by Harmony Grass  1968
Recommended by tempted [profile]

This is a mesmerizing pop-psych number from maybe the greatest British vocal group of the sixties. The composition is adventurous and reminiscent of SF-based sunshine pop but with that distinctive, eloquent British touch.
Harmony Grass was the group Tony Rivers fronted after his success with The Castaways.
He's been an important influence on Mike Alway's legendary l label.

available on CD - Tony Rivers Series vol. 2 (RPM/Cherry Red)

12 Dec 03 ·musicmars: Yea tempted, we agree once more. I love that song. Another of the best 60's pop-psych songs. I can't think of one that's better. How is the rest of the cd? I only have the song on an el compilation.
  07 May 04 ·delicado: Winning track!
18 Aug 05 ·eftimihn: Just wanted to recommend this to see it's already here. Fantastic track for sure, the whole album is uneven but "I think of you" is another winner on there...
24 Jun 09 ·Major Minor: Excellent track... I would also put up "What a groovy day" at least as good as this one. If anyone wanted to further check into Tony Rivers of this era the "Harmony Grass" compilation is recommended...
I Can't Wait To Get To See My Baby's Face  performed by Dusty Springfield  1967
Recommended by tempted [profile]

To me this is the coolest recording of the loungey soul pop classic. Dusty's performance is as excellent as ever and it puts a lot of weight on the lyrics that contemplate what to do with an unfaithful man. Saint Etienne built their track "Nothing Can Stop Us" on a sample of the main flute and horn riff.

from Where Am I Going? (Philips), available on CD

09 Apr 02 ·delicado: Wow, Saint Etienne used the sample well! I must confess I had no idea that riff was sampled. Great track!
03 Feb 04 ·Arthur: A much covered song and I'm afraid the over rated Dusty is way down the list in the quality stakes. Stick with Jeanette "Baby" Washingtons 'Sue' label version !
05 Apr 06 ·eftimihn: Hmm, i must admit i don't know enough versions of this song to put up a ranking, but i just can't imagine Dusty scoring rather low on such a list. Simply wonderful and yeah, Saint Etienne used that sample to great effect.
Unchanging Window  performed by Broadcast  2000
Recommended by tempted [profile]

Broadcast are the perfect retro-futuristic band. They make space age pop like no one else today. Haunting Moogs, fuzzy, reverb-laden guitars and tight bass and drums. Trish Keenan's voice sounds like an understatement with its simple, effortless tone. For lovers of Morricone, United States Of America and Stereolab.

from Noise Made By People, available on CD (Warp)

Hyper music  performed by Muse  2001

Brilliant track complete with soaring lyrics and beautiful base line. Brilliantly performed.
