10 Mar 06 ·rum: i can't stand either star wars or the decemberists but the sheer clout of your recommendation has convinced me to listen to this song. i must head out into the streets and find this song before dawn breaks. 14 Mar 06 ·n-jeff: You know, I don't like Star Wars either. I'd always felt so alone until now..... I don't think I'll track the track down, from the recommendation, it just doesn't seem like my bag. 15 Mar 06 ·anakinskywalker: well... my name is annie. so people call me annie-kin a.k.a. anakin. i'm a GIRL so of course i'm not really a star wars fan. haha.
unbelievably cool track, one of my top ten gainsbourg compositions. great jazzy sex beat, smooth vocals.
it's one of his more agressive songs, similar to the also recommended "un poison violent c'est l'amour".
there seems to be a bit of a bit of a prog vibe going on (in lack of better words, i'm not exactly an expert in the technicalities of music).
nice guitar hook. though the track is pretty repetitive, it's by no means boring. the repetition only helps to make it more intense and interesting.
taken from the film le pacha. i think a lot of gainsbourg's soundtrack work is pretty interesting stuff, though some of it often seems a bit rushed or too similar to other cool compositions from the same era (hey, i'm a sucker for plagiarism...)
the soundtrack to cannabis comes especially recommended.
available on CD - le ciinma de serge gainsbourg, initials b.b and a bunch of othe
25 May 06 ·n-jeff: There is an instrumental version on a twelve inch I have that sounds remarkably prescient of Metal Box era PiL: heavy repetetive bass, odd guitar noises and something about the drums, too.
Great track, vocal or no. 28 Aug 06 ·olli: oh, thats awesome, n-jeff! i always wondered if there was an instrumental version...one of the funkiest white tracks ever
17 Jul 06 ·n-jeff: The One rose is (another) one of my favourite LP's. And In My Humble Opinion, one of the underated classics of Country and Rockabilly. This isn't the track song I would have chosen off it, preferring the twangier uptempo stuff. Which isn't to say its not a great song, it is.
A sensuously haunting track, from the equally haunting soundtrack of a notoriously haunting film. Sparse, but slowly layered and building with anticipation. Don't know much about the late Paul Giovanni, but he surely hit a home run with this entire soundtack.
available on CD - The Wicker Man (OST) (Silva)
01 Sep 06 ·n-jeff: Lovely stuff, but strangely, disquietingly, indistinct. One of the tracks that got me sacked from a regular pub DJ slot. haha.
Since I've been recommending on this site for a while, I came up with a new idea in January. A lot of my all time favourites are on here now, so what I thought I would do now is to recommend a track every week that has had most resonance for me over the past seven days.
A bit of background: I've been having an unhappy time at work lately. I sometimes work shifts and don't get in until 11pm. As I have been so stressed with my daily grind, I've been finding it very difficult to wind down at the end of the day.
This song, this week, is suddenly making sense to me. It's calmed the jumble in my head every night by understanding that the world isn't an ordered place. I've been coaxed out of my rigid state by these 17 minutes. It's not my favourite Velvet Underground song - that would be The Murder Mystery - but after years of always thinking Sister Ray was a self-indulgent filler, I think I finally grasp what its purpose is. Or, at least, I now know there are only certain, bloody awful, weeks in which I can find the beautiful oyster inside this track.
I will return to normal service next week with my usual gay disco or girl group love.
from White Light / White Heat, available on CD
03 Feb 05 ·stupidwall: i always thought sister ray was one of their most overrated songs. it mostly just sounds like nonsense. i guess i'll just wait till im unhappy or just in the right mood. 26 Sep 06 ·n-jeff: Sounds like a fairly straight description of some sailors having a heroin and sex orgy with a bunch of transvestites to me.
If such a thing can be said to be straight....
