Nao Tem Nada Nao  performed by Marcos Valle  1973
Recommended by pleasepleaseme [profile]

WOW! 3 fat composers ( Marcos Valle, Joao Donato & Deodato) join forces for one groovy track. Awesome keyboard work from Bertrami of Azymuth. Mesmerizing, sexy and funky.

from Previsao Do Tempo, available on CD (Odeon)

30 Jul 04 ·n-jeff: Very pleased to say I saw Marcos Valle perform this last night. Thats a great set of names to drop "Heres a song I wrote with Eumir Deodato and Jao Donato". Very cool. And a very good song, he handled the keys himself live.
And thanks to everyone whos namedropped Valle on musical taste, as I otherwise would have missed out on a great gig!

15 Jul 06 ·ambassador: this track was a reworking of Donato's tune "Batuque" from his album with Deodato, called "Joao Donato" or Donato/Deodato on the original LP. Basically, Marcos Valle liked the song and decided to add lyrics. Funnily, the way that Donato/Deodato was recorded each of these famous composers added their parts seperately starting with Donato's keyboards, then Deodato's arrangement and then marcos took that and reworked it with lyrics and azimuth as his backup band. one of my all-time favorite tracks.
Satan  performed by Jon Lucien  1973

Another fine "Scat" vocal track & there are others on this powerful record. All songs are by Jon Lucien. Outstanding voice & lyrics plus strong arranging & conducing by Lucien and Dave Grusin. SoulJazz at its best!

from Rashida, available on CD (RCA)

My Life  performed by Nelson Riddle  1973
Recommended by scrubbles [profile]

Ahhh. Short but sensational instrumental written and arranged by Claus Ogerman. It reminds me of a lusher, more dynamic version of the background music from The Price Is Right. Definitely a Now Sound of Today thing.

from Changing Colors
available on CD - Cafe Apres Midi: Rouge (Universal Japan)

Steppin In Her I. Miller Shoes  performed by Betty Davis  1973
Recommended by jeanette [profile]

Can't fault this entire album, but this wins by a shade as my favourite. This is the sound of those very shoes being stabbed into your face, and you being grateful.

from Betty Davis, available on CD (MPC Ltd)

Devil, Devil, Go Away  performed by Little Marcy  1973

Ever felt there was a hole in your life that only a religious ventriloquist's dummy could fill? Then look no further. One of pop's bona-fide eccentrics, Marcy Tigner, voices Little Marcy in a thoroughly winsome way. The song, nay the whole album, encourages all young children to renounce the devil. However, if the devil were to see the scarily-bad drawing of Little Marcy on the cover, he would correctly deduce that no child is likely to listen to the ravings of a freaky end-of-the-pier doll voiced by an even stranger adult woman.

"Marcy wants you all to know how happy she is singing songs about Jesus" relate the sleevenotes. And, gee Marcy, we sure are glad to hear them!

Please don't think I recommended this song simply to mock it. I genuinely think it's a priceless piece of recorded gold and am more than pleased this site, and the world, is big enough to accommodate special talents like that of Marcy Tigner.

Out of Waco, Texas.

from Happy Am I (Word K-721)

26 Apr 04 ·olli: aah, little marcy. i find her oddly touching. i adore the effect where the guitar seems to be meowing on "i love little pussy", it makes the song even more appealing than the questionable lyrics. "guitar festival of gospel songs" by little marcy's guitarist, bob summers is the current downloadable album over at basichip.com right now, by the way. snatch it while you can!
