The Nightingale  performed by Julee Cruise  1989
Recommended by JoNZ [profile]

This song breaks my heart every time I hear it. Musically, it's like "Leader of the Pack", but at a snails pace. the thing is that the lyrics and Julee Cruise's delivery are so full of sadness and desire. The feeling grows as the song progresses, especially when the background wail kicks in. It illuminates dark places in the heart. This song is also included on the Twin Peaks sound track.

from Falling Into the Night (Warner Bros. 4-25859), available on CD

The 3rd Time We Opened the Capsule  performed by Kitchens of Distinction  1989
Recommended by Genza [profile]

A great, great pop song. Just over three minutes of swirling noise and chunky power chords. Now readily available again on 'Capsule', a limited edition best of double CD. Nice one.

from Capsule (One Little Indian TPLP613CDL)

21 May 03 ·delicado: I had completely forgotten about this. Nice one indeed! O'Leary, eh...
22 May 03 ·Genza: It's easy to forget about it - but you should listen to how great it still sounds. I was amazed. It's slips down so sweet - like a smooth, velveteen bunny honey. And David O'Leary is a confirmed Kitchens fans apparently. Not sure if he likes Kachloul or Aplay though...
Try to Believe  performed by Oingo Boingo  1989

This track that also appears on the Midnight Run soundtrack is one of Danny Elfman's finest songs.

from Dark At the End of the Tunnel, available on CD (MCA)

Moonlight Shadow  performed by Annie Haslam  1989
Recommended by elfslut [profile]

This song is from Annie's debut self titled album. If you enjoy that new age celtic sound, this is a song that you shouldn't miss.

Annie's voice has a haunting quality about it...without sounding like every other female vocalist in her genre. Her music is definitely worth taking a second listen to.

from Annie Haslam

Phoney Ladies  performed by Neneh Cherry  1989

Great bopping beats and a fantastic chorus. Lyrical content is Neneh's stalwart, female rivalry.

I went to a fancy dress party as Neneh once. Someone told me I looked more like Martika...

from Raw Like Sushi, available on CD (Virgin)
