The Body Breaks  performed by Devendra Banhart
Recommended by megara [profile]

El correr de los dedos a lo largo de las cuerdas de una guitarra acustica. Una voz temblorosa. Una letra que quema los oidos. Una rareza y yo la encontré.

from Rejoicing the hands (Young God Records)

12 May 04 ·plasticsun: An incredibly strange and beautiful song.
"make me smile (come up and see me)"  performed by steve harley & cockney reject  1975

this song is brilliant. lyrics quite catchy and fun and the tune is simply great. a nice combination of a music style you just don't seem to hear anymore with lyrics you could almost laugh at, but don't, because it could happen. simply great.

available on CD - best years of our lives

17 May 04 ·plasticsun: This is a great song - especially Steve Harley's ridiculously affected vocals!
07 Nov 05 ·popgoestheculture: I absolutely adore Steve Harley and the Cockney Rebel!, I think the song 'Man it Was Mean' is my favourite.
For one moment  performed by Lee Hazlewood  1966
Recommended by delicado [profile]

An incredible doomy pop masterpiece, 'For one moment' is a dark, haunting ballad, laden with rich strings. I guess what makes it stand out is the recording itself - Lee was a master of studio techniques, and so the whole thing has an uncanny, almost Phil Spector type feel to it.

from The Very Special World of Lee Hazlewood (MGM)

24 May 04 ·plasticsun: Have you noticed that the string part sounds a lot like the string part in Scott Walker's "Plastic Palace People"?
08 Apr 05 ·olli: Brilliant song, was going to recommend it myself, but luckily remembered to check for earlier entries. Always thougt this had kind of a Michel Magne feel myself..it's the swirling strings, i guess. Check out his version of Poinciana and Petrol Pop to see what i mean.
Alone Again Or  performed by Love  1967
Recommended by sinister [profile]

the words "i could be in love with almost every one/ and i will be alone again tonight with you" are sung in a very intimate high-register, backed by glorious acoustic guitar plucking and horn bursts. two minutes in, the song erupts into an extended horn solo! probably the most perfectly orchestrated pop song.

from Forever Changes, available on CD

09 Oct 04 ·plasticsun: I agree - unfortunately so did Miller beer, which used the horn part in a commericial aimed at the "Cinco de mayo" crowd. Still an incredible song.
Lost in the Paradise  performed by Caetano Veloso  1969
Recommended by Jackamaku [profile]

Veloso recorded this while in prison. Don't ask me how.

from Caetano Veloso
available on CD - Soul Jazz Records Presents Tropicalia: A Brazilian Revolution in Sound

15 May 07 ·plasticsun: Actually he was in exile in Britain.
