A sweet remembrance of a childhood moment told in song. Loretta recalls sitting in her daddy's lap looking at a picture of a beautiful young woman. He tells her how this young woman was the most beautiful girl in town and how every man wanted to make her his wife. He talks about the poor young man who was teased and derided by all the other men who told him that he didn't stand a chance with her. Finally he talks about how that poor boy won her heart and then reveals that the woman in the picture is Loretta's mother and he is the poor young man. Jack White of the White Stripes did a tremendous job putting the music together on this song and indeed on the whole album Van Lear Rose that is not to be missed!
Cass Elliott at her sassy best. A jazzy/bluesy song wherein Ms. Elliott lays it on the line. If her man doesn't do right by her she is going to send him packing!
This world is a slightly dimmer place since Cass departed...

One of the best country ballads ever recorded. Sammi Smith's low husky voice and desperate crescendo on the bridge of the song make this an essential recording for a rainy day.

As Morrissey would say, I know very well how I got my name. This is the track that inspired the name I use here, on my email, on ebay, amazon, etc A song about loving and accepting yourself despite others inability or unwillingness to acknowledge you. This is truly one of the best tracks Tori recorded during the Little Earthquakes phase and promptly buried as a b-side track on a single release. (most of her best tracks end up on b-sides for some reason)

15 Sep 04 ·konsu: Hmmm... I always thought your name was a reference to the great jazz label. They put out some of their best records in the early 70's... I do however acknowledge and accept the origin of your name despite my unwillingness!
If you had one of the premium movie channels in the 1980's, you may have happened across a late-night showing of the Softcore-Porn-Musical film "Cinderella". While several of the musical numbers are quite good and rather amusing, the best song (imho) is "Art to Zebras", performed by 'Fairy Godmother' (a stereotypical crossdressing gay black man). This song is basically a list of all of the items he has stolen from the townspeople... and being that the film was made in 1977, yes, it is a disco number. Definitely a relic of it's time but nonetheless a great number from one of the films I keep in my Guilty Pleasure Chest.
