J'Attendrai  performed by Rina Ketty  1938
Composed by Poterat/Oliveri

You can hear this one over the closing credits of Francois Truffaut's "Une Belle Fille Comme Moi". My French is not good enough to understand the story behind who or what she is waiting for but it is heartbreaking nevertheless. CD song listings describes it as "Slow-fox-chante".

from Rina Ketty 1936-1939 (Chansophone 129), available on CD

Mommie's Drunk  performed by MAOW  1996
Composed by MAOW

From one of the great rock'n'roll albums. The lyrics make this track a standout with the closing denouement of "your mommie's on one scary ride.... and it's all because your daddy lied". Trash culture of the highest level.

from The Unforgiving Sounds Of... (Mint MRD-019), available on CD

Barely Human  performed by Robbie Fulks  1996
Composed by Robbie Fulks

Robbie is more noted for bringing a wicked sense of humour to his tunes but this one certainly is an exception. He may have origionally conceived of it as humourous but I think it was producer Steve Albini who convinced him to play it totally straight. What they got was one of the most harrowing listening experiences ever.

from Country Love Songs (Bloodshot BS011), available on CD

I'm A Free Man Now  performed by Faron Young  195?

This song is a "new country" music fan's worst nightmare. This is the kind of song that they are afraid people will think they like when they admit to liking country music. Faron had learned his Hank Williams lessons very well before setting this one down.

from Buck Owens-Ferlin Husky-Faron Young (Hilltop JM-6027)

Chick Habit  performed by April March  1995
Composed by Serge Gainsbourg

For those not yet ready for France Gall/Serge Gainsbourg quite yet. This is Elinor Blake's (aka April March) English language version of "Laisse Tomber Les Filles" written by Gainsbourg and made famous by Gall. I prefer this meatier version to the France Gall original but it did get me to go out and purchase my first France Gall CD. The CD also contains a French language version of the same song.

from Chick Habit (Sympathy For The Record Industry SFTRI 398), available on CD
