6060-842  performed by The B-52s  1979
Recommended by rum [profile]

The lyrical theme of 6060-842 seems pretty mundane for the B-52s. Tina goes to the ladies room, sees a phone number scrawled on the wall, and so decides to ring it. Hmm doesnt sound like its gonna be a tale the measure of the time our car was hijacked by the devil and the like. Still this IS the B-52s, and recognisably so, if youd like a very nice time, just give this number a call reads the unlikely graffiti. So something must happen. The band are optimistic too, bouncing along excitedly on a jumpy new wave rhythm. Tina, we reckon, is much like the band. She lives for wild parties and crazy adventures. This 6060-842 could be just the ticket. Oh my gawd! Im gonna give that there number a ring. You see if I dont! So she drops a dime in the phone slot and, prays she gets the line. Shes biting her lip, stabbing her nails into her finger tips, come on come ON!!!

But pause a moment. Is she really so nave? Does she really think a really nice time awaits her? In the gnarled and weather beaten hands of a social realist singer-songwriter, the number 6060-842 would lead to abuse, to prostitution, and ultimately, to death. In the hands of the B-52s? I dont know, you tell me. A debauched toga party in a 1950s vision of the future? Well, its neither. Its just a brilliant anti-climax. You see Tina and the B-52a might be deranged, but the world they live in is not. Its bloody typical. She dials 6060-842, and cant get through! The numbers been disconnected monotones the operator. But Tina wont accept this, no, and neither will the band. They cant end the track with Tina accepting the disappointment with a sigh of weary resignation, ah well, nevermind maybe next time. No, no, this anti-climax has worked them up into an angry frenzy. Ricky Wilson vents his frustration with viscious slashes of electric guitar whilst Tina just keeps dialing and dialing, and getting rebuffed and rebuffed, HELLO!!! sorry The track probably ends with them all smashing up the phone box. A superb, and much over-looked track.

Fast, good clean vocals, powerful song. Techy yet simple.

Hope  performed by R.E.M.  1998
Recommended by dyfl [profile]

One of the stranger tracks on R.E.M.'s strangest album -- it borrows the melody from Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" and sets it in a slowly building landscape of buzzing guitars and electronic beeps (it's a lot prettier than it sounds, believe me). "You want to go out Friday and you want to go forever" -- does he mean go out for a good time, or go out permanently? Stipe ain't saying...

hoy me has dicho hola por primera vez  performed by la casa azul  2000

somewhere between the free design and hideki kaji you get la casa azul. sweet 60s pop with some nice "ba ba ba ba..." thrown in. bouncy, quirky and basically all around fun. one of the few new bands i am really excited by.

Just Ah  performed by The Blades of Grass  1967
Recommended by delicado [profile]

Deeply awesome! It's a slightly psychedelic pop song from the late 60s. Delectable instrumentation and vocals. Strings and a bit of sitar on top of a regular guitar band. Lots of moaning in the vocal. Really lovely stuff. A compilation CD is available on Revola. It hasn't arrived yet but if it's all up to this standard I'm excited!

eftimihn: I'd like to second that, absolutely terrific song and i must say nothing on "Are not for smoking" can match this gem for me.

I just had to recommend this song when I saw that no one had even recommended one song by them. There's something about the song that makes me so happy. I really don't know what it is about this song that makes me feel happy and excited , but maybe if you listen to it you can tell me.

The Way of the World  performed by Justin Hayward  1996
Recommended by elfslut [profile]

As a huge Moody Blues fan, I'm always excited to hear a new track by the frontman, Justin Hayward. This track from his 96 solo album is one worth listening to.

Somewhere between 91 and 96, Justin learned to handle his guitar like George Harrison. You'll notice this if you listen to the Moody Blues' 99 offering Strange Times, but that's not the point. On this particular song, you get the Harrison-like guitar-riff along with the haunting vocals that Hayward is famous for. Combined the two are a powerful mix. This song and all the others on the CD are worth taking a listen too.

Time Wont Let Me  performed by The Outsiders  1966

The epitome of joyous, alive, who gives a sh*t rock'n'roll, with a slight blue eyed soul feeling and great horns. Everyone needs a song like this in their life.

We´re here  performed by Guillemots  2006
Recommended by moondog [profile]

I can´t remember the last time i was so excited by an english band. Guillemots seem to have everything that´s been lacking in a british pop band for the last couple of years. we´re here is a stringladen, anthemic pop song and when i´m listening to it everyone from a-ha, prefab sprout, scott walker is evoked but in the end it sounds only like the guillemots. Seriously lovely
