Tony Mansfield (New Musik) produced mock-soul from the best beehive in the biz next to Kate & Cindy; from the spoken intro, to the soaring brass and strings, it is the blend of Bacharach and Motown that should've translated into a much bigger hit than it did.

Not quite sure how he could have had a pop show on tv in the mid 70s, though...The big hit he had with Mari Wilson was "Just what I've always wanted". a very atmospheric song. a quiet intro that slowly builds up. the vocals are frail and mysterious, they feel frail and light. the whole song seems to fade at the end, one keeps expecting it to stop, but it goes on for over six minutes.
it's no "swamp thing" (the obligatory comparison) but a very nice tune nonetheless.

06 Sep 06 ·callgirlscene: "Atmospheric" as you say. I like that song, and virtually the whole album, Script of the Bridge. It's stood up to many, many listenings. I stumbled across it in 1990. What a nice discovery.
There is much that U2 did in their first three albums (Boy, October, War) that have been forgotten by the clout caused by their next three (The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Rattle and Hum). When people say they don't much like U2, it's largely based off of only the singles from War up through Achtung Baby. This song is representative of songs, for even some sincere U2 fans, that have been forgotten injustly. Brilliant structure and chords, somewhat cheesy but ultimately highly forgivable middle section.
