96 Tears  performed by Big Maybelle  1967
Recommended by tinks [profile]

Searing r&b cover of the ? & the Mysterians classic. Maybelle almost sounds like she singing this about somebody else, and like she's amused by the pain she's caused. I know it's been comped a number of times, but I'm not sure of where.

from the single 96 Tears (Rojac 112)

  30 Jun 03 ·shaka_klaus: nice one.
The Breath of Death  performed by Ennio Morricone  1969
Recommended by tinks [profile]

Morricone seems to have taken quite a few pages from Komeda's score for "Rosemary's Baby" here for the soundtrack to this Dario Argento serial killer movie. This track features some creepy heavy breathing, cascading dissonant piano notes, and some of the scariest "la-la-la"-ing ever committed to wax. I've never seen the movie, but based on the record, I'm pretty certain that it would scare the hell out of me.

from The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (Capitol ST-642)

17 Oct 03 ·sodapop651: the movie is pretty whack.
3-2-1-Ah  performed by Los Canarios  1967
Recommended by tinks [profile]

These Canary Islands boys try their best to disguise their accents on this snarling proto-Stooges number with almost militaristic drumming and ethereal backing vocals. The flip to the club classic "Get on Your Knees".

from the single 3-2-1-Ah (Calla)
available on CD - Planetary Pebbles 2: Exitos a-Go-Go (AIP)

  20 Oct 03 ·shaka_klaus: i love this! great stuff!
Fim de Semana em Guaruja  performed by Os Tres Brasilieiros  1969
Recommended by tinks [profile]

A lovely, gentle samba with wordless three-part mixed harmonies, gently swinging organ and subtle percussion.

from Brazil: LXIX (Capitol ST-301)

19 Jan 04 ·delicado: I still don't have this album (and it just sold for a whopping $79 on ebay!) but from the picture on the back cover, I'd say this is definitely the same group as Os 3 Morais.
20 Jan 04 ·tinks: 79 bucks! i paid a quarter! i listened to the clip on your morais recommendation, and it definitely sounds like the same people. mystery solved!
Chain of Fools  performed by Jimmy Brown  1968

Absolutely stunning hammond version of the Don Covay/Aretha classic on this label out of Nashville. Another guy that I know nothing about.

from the single Chain of Fools (A-Bet)
