I understand they were sued by the Rolling Stones for lifting the string arrangement. For the life of me I can't figure out what song from the Stones it would conflict with. Do you know? 12 Oct 05 ·rum: Back in the day their manager Andrew Loog Oldham did an album of symphonic versions of stones songs ('The Rolling Stones Songbook'), and it was from his take on 'The Last Time' that the Verve nicked their main riff. Underrated Monkees pop song with a country feel to it about getting tired of a lover's lies: "times have made me shy of all the things you're saying, times have made me shy of girls and all the games they are playing".

As you may know this is the first song first side of Headquarters which was the first Monkees album that featured them playing arranging and producing the music. Mike Nesmith penned tune with a great banjo work from Peter Tork. This cut probably opened the ears of a few cynics when it came out. Definitely not light weight pop, more of a Byrds, country rock feel.
Very underated song and album.
Given the recent reevaluation of "mainstream" 60s pop acts such as the Association, the Monkees & Free Design, it seems a shame that more people aren't aware of how great the Grassroots were. Best known for their oldies-radio staples "Midnight Confessions" and "Let's Live for Today", they were purveyors of great well-crafted, country-rock-tinged pop music. This track is a perfect example, deftly combining vibes, mandolin, handclaps, fuzz guitar and terrific lyrics into an inimitable 60s L.A. sound. Check them out, it's high time that they got their due. And a special note for all you trainspotters out there...you can see the band perform this song in the 1968 Doris Day vehicle "With Six You Get Egg Roll".

11 Oct 05 ·adam12: Right! I can remember most local bands covering this tune in the mid-late 60's. Sounds good coming out of a garage. Kinda like "Nobody But Me" by the Human Beings.
