Once in Lifetime  performed by Talking Heads  1980
Composed by Talking heads /Brian Eno

A bubbling almost loop like backing track punctuated by David Byrnes deranged t.v evangelist style exclamations "My god this is not my beautiful house ,this is not my beautiful wife, what have i done"? .Then a stroke of genius to pull the song back from the edge of avant garde ,a joyous funky ,gospel inspired chorus .A band at their most inspired and confident with the wizardry of Eno pressing all the right buttons.Hard to believe no one has recomended this before.

from Remain in Light
available on CD - Remain In Light

Looking Glass  performed by The La,s   1989
Composed by Lee Mavers

An epic finale to an epic album, psychedelic but inside the real world ,existential but accesible, beautiful acoustic guitars and backing harmonies. This is the birth or re birth of British pop music after its castration at the hands of eighties over production and souless technology.Dragging Pink Floyd behind it on its way to meet Oasis a few years down the line .

from self titled 1990, available on CD

You remain an Angel  performed by Danny Wilson  1987
Composed by G Clark/J Grimes

An eighties incarnation of the epic sadness and yearning that the Walker Brothers did so well with the songs of Jaques Brel and Bob Gaudio(Sun aint gonna shine Anymore). This band was a rare thing at this point ,they had aspirations to write great timeless songs when drum machines ruled the world. On this ,they suceeded ,the songs heartbreaking climax could make a man cry, awash with brave brass and orchestral tears leaving a man broken in two and drowning in his own tears by the time the song fades into an eerie percussive silence .

from Meet Danny Wilson, available on CD

I Dream of Wire  performed by Robert Palmer  1980
Composed by Gary Numan

An emerging Palmer covers a song from the fully emerged Gary Numan ,who also plays on this ,a great time capsule instance of what was once considered cool. The droning single not synth line occasionally errupts into a somewhat clumsy chorus which dates the track beyond belief ,but if you can recommend a track on the premise of interesting then this would qualify.

from Clues, available on CD

Fridays Angels   performed by Generation x  1979
Composed by B.Idol/T James

A punk band that made the progress limited to just a few like the Jam and Killing Joke. This is guitar shaped power pop with a healthy slice of mod swagger and a fantastic chorus .A kind of Bowie esque tribute to wasted cool and what should have been a sure fire top tenner .This came from a buried gem of an album produced by Mott the Hooples Ian Hunter and listening now with hindsight that makes perfect sense ,the group and producer managing to crytalise glams optimism and punks negativity.

from Valley of the Dolls (Chrysalis)
available on CD - Valley of the Dols
