Without Her  performed by Preston Guild  196?
Composed by Harry Nilsson

Preston [in fact there is no performer name on this 45 e.p. but this seems to be the label name so its as good as any ] and the band take a minimal take on this Nilsson song and give it a slightly Latin feel. And its Preston's delivery coupled with the organ that make this track essential. Unfortunately the other titles on the e.p. fall short of even interesting

from unknown (Preston Guild)

05 Feb 03 ·konsu: One of his most covered songs at least in the pop canon. It seems like there's sooo many more versions to be found yet!I'd like to hear this one. Also check out the latinized brilliance of Blood, Sweat & Tears version from their"Child Is Father to the Man" LP. Maybe thats where these guys picked-up the style for their take...?
I Feel Pretty  performed by Little Richard  1996
Composed by Leonard Bernstein -Stephen Sondhiem

The King of Rock And Roll excells himself in this 1996 track from the various artists album ' The Songs Of West Side Story ' . Done as a kind of Blues / Waltz, it is of course a girls song as a norm and only Richard could get away with this gender reversal version and boy it really works !

The album also has a great version of 'Somewhere ' from Aretha Franklin too.

from The Songs Of Westside Story (RCA 09026 -62707-2), available on CD

Wee Ooh, I’ll Let It Be You  performed by Louise Lewis Miss L L  1966
Composed by Louise Lewis - Ray van Dant

From the mysterious Miss Lewis - she had other releases - a Northern Soul stormer . This record has been bootlegged and also issued on cd.
Its a typical Sixties kitchen sink Los Angeles full on dance production featuring the vocal slightly unusual vocal talents of Louise. Does anyone know anything about her?

available on CD - Northen Soul Time (Goldmine GSCD 77)

Do Your Own Thing  performed by Brook Benton  1968
Composed by Leiber/ Stoller

Leiber and Stoller give Brook a Bacharach/ David feel on Brooks debut single for Cotillion and indeed it is the flip side of an unremarkable version of thier "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself". Brook just does nothing with the song. (Cissy Houston's, for my money is still the best version )
"Do You Own Thing" is a little gem however, with a sympathetic arrangement a long way from the R'n'B sound Leiber and Stoller are famous for. It starts with the trademark trumpet found on all the best Dionne Warwick sides and a wonderful string arrangement and a bitter/sweet lyric.

Afro - Harping  performed by Dorothy Ashby  196?
Composed by Dorothy Ashby/ Phil Upchurch

Cool in the Xxtreme !
Sixties dance jazz funk instumental from harpist Dorothy. Complete with organs, flutes and bongos it is driving classy joyful music .

The album also contains the awesome "Action Line " which is weirdly atmospheric and deeply strange

from Afro - Harping ( CADET LPS809)
