Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child  performed by Little Jimmy Scott  1969
Recommended by tinks [profile]

Stunning version of this old standard. Jimmy Scott's voice is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful things in the world. I've never heard anybody else who could channel so much pain into a song. Regardless of your feelings toward David Lynch, you have to respect him for rescuing Scott's career from obscurity.

from The Source (Tangerine), available on CD (Label M.)

24 Jul 01 ·delicado: yeah, I picked up the European reissue of this album recently, and have to agree with you on its power. I first came across Scott on the 'fire, walk with me' soundtrack, and for many years, 'Jimmy Scott' was just that strange voice. I only figured out the gender quite recently.
Zoom  performed by Francis Lai  1967
Recommended by tinks [profile]

Killer organ-laden soundtrack cut with a wordless vocal provided by a male chorus, and featuring the incessant cackling of a young Candace Bergen.

from Live for Life (United Artists)
available on CD - A Man and a Woman/Live for Life (DRG)

21 Sep 01 ·tempted: Yes! I've played this in my dj sets several times. Its character and the sense of comedy, not to mention the grooviness, makes it a great "interlude" between some, er, more serious songs.
24 Sep 01 ·tinks: it's a staple in my dj sets, as well! glad to see that others have picked up on it, also!
A Banda  performed by Chico Buarque de Hollanda  1963
Recommended by tinks [profile]

The original version of this Brazilian classic, it was covered by just about everybody. Has that children's chorus doing backing vocals that the Brazilians seem to love so much.

from Chico Buarque de Hollanda
available on CD - Minha Historia (Polygram Brazil)

03 Dec 01 ·delicado: I was listening to Astrud Gilberto's translated version of this today (on the 'beach samba' LP), and I found it quite hard to handle. I will have to check out the original some time.
21 Oct 03 ·heinmukk: the astrud gilberto version is rather strange. i mean, it's the march version or what? i don't like it. better take a listen to the version by france gall. i know it as "zwei apfelsinen im haar" which means "two oranges in the hair". (?) it's a classic in germany. france gall sings in german with a subtle french accent. can it get more sexy? i don't think so...
05 May 04 ·sodapop650: If its the song Im thinking of, I think that Quarteto Em Cy do a nice cover as well.
Big White Cloud  performed by John Cale  1970
Recommended by tinks [profile]

A superb song from Cale's first solo LP after leaving the Velvet Underground. Very melodic, lushly orchestrated and sophisticated, an absolutely impeccably-crafted pop song. I really love the echo effect on the whole thing, coupled with Cale's ultra-fluid viola playing. A great album from start to finish, actually.

from Vintage Violence, available on CD (Columbia)

28 Feb 02 ·G400 Custom: Also check out 'Gideon's Bible' from this album. Soothingly poppy, but with a fantastic, soaring chorus - not usually one of Cale's strengths.
Burning in the Background of My Mind  performed by Tina Tott  196?
Recommended by tinks [profile]

Great brooding mid-60s melodrama from this obscure British girl singer. A terrific stomping number dealing with the age-old teenage theme of heartbreak. "Burning in the background of my mind/are memories/and they seem to haunt me."

available on CD - Here Come the Girls, Volume 8 (Sequel)

06 May 02 ·fullwoof: This song was recorded in 1969. To the best of my knowledge, she recorded only one single. The flip is equally as good: Take Away My Emptiness Too
