Girl In A Sportscar  performed by Alan Hawkshaw  1973
Recommended by nighteye [profile]

We see the road going by us, close up on a spinning wheel of the car. Close-up on a side-mirror. Close up on the rear-view mirrow. We see a woman putting on her lipstick. Full frame view of the woman; she has trendy sunglasses, a hat and a red scarf blowing in the wind. She smiles. We see the car, it is a sportscar with the top down. It passes by other cars on the open road, as it continues down the road we zoom out using a helicopter. We see the Californian rocky landscape and the crooked road following it. We go further and further back. Fade out.

available on CD - The Sound Gallery (Scamp)

12 Sep 05 ·olli: how about writing something to accompany your recommendations? A couple of sentences about why you like the song, images that pop up in your head when you hear it, or anything else that may help us connect with it and make us want to hear it, really. A recommendation that is devoid of some sort od emotional investment is basically worthless..Wich is a shame, since you seem to have quite good taste in music.

07 Oct 05 ·sinferno: Awesome classic. I love this track every time.
11 Oct 05 ·adam12: Love this track too. One of the first songs I loaded onto my ipod. I understand they were sued by the Rolling Stones for lifting the string arrangement. For the life of me I can't figure out what song from the Stones it would conflict with. Do you know?
12 Oct 05 ·rum: Back in the day their manager Andrew Loog Oldham did an album of symphonic versions of stones songs ('The Rolling Stones Songbook'), and it was from his take on 'The Last Time' that the Verve nicked their main riff. No one's gonna mess with the 'Loog' and get away with it!
22 Oct 05 ·olli: Yeah, I'm really glad to have a copy of the Andrew Oldham album. Now that i've heard the original, I've no reasons left whatsoever to enjoy anything by the Verve...
Requiem pour un con  performed by serge gainsbourg

unbelievably cool track, one of my top ten gainsbourg compositions. great jazzy sex beat, smooth vocals.
it's one of his more agressive songs, similar to the also recommended "un poison violent c'est l'amour".
there seems to be a bit of a bit of a prog vibe going on (in lack of better words, i'm not exactly an expert in the technicalities of music).
nice guitar hook. though the track is pretty repetitive, it's by no means boring. the repetition only helps to make it more intense and interesting.
taken from the film le pacha. i think a lot of gainsbourg's soundtrack work is pretty interesting stuff, though some of it often seems a bit rushed or too similar to other cool compositions from the same era (hey, i'm a sucker for plagiarism...)
the soundtrack to cannabis comes especially recommended.

available on CD - le ciinma de serge gainsbourg, initials b.b and a bunch of othe

25 May 06 ·n-jeff: There is an instrumental version on a twelve inch I have that sounds remarkably prescient of Metal Box era PiL: heavy repetetive bass, odd guitar noises and something about the drums, too. Great track, vocal or no.
28 Aug 06 ·olli: oh, thats awesome, n-jeff! i always wondered if there was an instrumental version...one of the funkiest white tracks ever
Du e fr fin fr mig  performed by dungen  2004
Recommended by olli [profile]

Outstanding Swedish psychpop, sounds like the aural lovechild of an orgy between sigur ros, hansson & karlsson and radiohead's karma police. gorgeous stringwork. ends in a psychedelic freakout.
the whole album is pretty good (imo the best swedish record of 2004), don't hesitate to buy the swedish import if you come across it..

17 Jan 06 ·tempted: This is indeed great! Dungen deserve 100% of the attention he has received stateside recently. Ta Det Lugnt reminds me of another one of the great psych-pop albums of all time which is S.F. Sorrow by The Pretty Things. Although Dungen perhaps comes from a sunnier place and definitely from the Swedish woods. I don't think Radiohead and Dungen have much in common, though. There are so many colours to psychedelia...
28 Aug 06 ·olli: don't get me wrong, i'm not saying dungen sounds like radiohead...just that this particular song shares some musical texture with karma police
