Meant for you  performed by The Beach Boys  1969

A charming little song which clocks in at around 35 seconds, opening the superb 'Friends' album. In a way which complements the superb Beach Boys track 'our prayer', 'meant for you' has a slight hint of a religious, hymn-like tone, with a prominent organ sound and uplifting words. The overall effect is a very warm, beautiful track which you keep wanting to hear again.

from Friends
available on CD - Friends/20 20

27 Aug 01 ·LawrenceM: there is another fantastic version of this on the Brain Wilson s/t album to the film "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times", just Brian on piano and vocals. I can't understand why "Friends" isn't up there is "Pet Sounds" ... it's suh a great, and overlooked, album.
04 Feb 03 ·hewtwit: Friends is indeed a great beach boys album, with only a few weak tracks. Smiley Smile I feel is also underrated for not being smile... It's still lovely music though.
Glamorous Glue  performed by Morrissey  1992

I became able to vote about a week after the UK Conservative party had just won a fourth straight election victory. For me, this song just captures those feelings of utter frustration and anger which I was feeling at the time:

'3rd week with the jar you find
everything dies
we won't vote conservative
because we never have
everyone lies, everyone lies!'

It ends with Morrissey basically giving up on the country, singing 'We look to Los Angeles/ For the language we use/ London is dead, London is dead.' Even listening to it now, it takes me straight back to what was a pretty grim time for me, and - frankly - Britain.

from Your Arsenal (HMV 0777 7 99794 2 4)

15 Oct 01 ·LawrenceM: and of course, not long after that Morrissey moved to Los Angeles, to live the life of a fading rock star in the Hollywood Hills. All of "Your Arsenal" is brilliant ......
Busby Berkeley Dreams  performed by Magnetic Fields  2000

Purest AOR - the lyrics are about rejecting a divorce petition. Pretty moving though - no jokes in this one ("darling you may do your worst/ because you'll have to kill me first"). This whole album is extremely good if you are interested.

from 69 Love songs, available on CD (House of tomorrow)

06 Feb 02 ·LawrenceM: Of course, you could have picked virtually any song from "69 Love Songs". A heartbreaking work of staggering genius. (My personal fave .... "I don't want to get over you" - the story of my life, age 18.)
07 Jan 04 ·umbrellasfollowrain: Oh dude, this song. This song. This song takes my heart and ties it to a string and walks around with it like a baloon. Many songs on the album do though. I'm a fan of "My Only Friend" and "Eptiaph For My Heart" and oh, the sweet horrible recognition found in "You're My Only Home".
Indian Strings  performed by The London Suede  1999

This song has the depth of vocals like the poetry by Rilke, meeting the somber and exhilirating movement of sound in a languid symphony. Its blood and romance, hurt and sweet love. Its the bird calling its mate. This is what I aspire to compose.

from Head Music

25 Mar 02 ·LawrenceM: yeah, this is a great song. i think "Head Music" is actually a pretty underrated album with some really fantastic songs. Although having to be called "The London Suede" in the US is just stupid. They'll always be Suede to me
