Saturday  performed by Yo La Tengo  2000

So sparse... I like this. It just about moves along and has a real feel of desolation and hopelessness. And there's a top-quality drum machine sound in there too - which you just can't beat.

from And then nothing turned itself inside out (Matador Ole 371-2)

Chance  performed by Mahogany  1998

Songs that are this good make life worth living. I’m listening to this now and I can’t believe quite how magnificent this song is.

It’s all the best bits of Slowdive, Stereolab and Seefel mixed into a gorgeous, cello-fused rhapsody. Oh, bring it on!

from The dream of a modern day (Burnt Hair Records Fern 018)

Fullness of Wind  performed by Brian Eno  1975

Discreet Music is quite a lengthy CD. The actual piece Discreet Music is over half an hour long and evokes Eno's wonderful Music for Airports.

Also included are three related pieces and this, Fullness of Wind, is the first of three variations on the Canon in D Major by Johann Pachelbel. It's the best of the three - and well worth a bang.

Eno fragments, overlays and slows different parts of the original score to create a beautiful ambient work. Kinda Steve Reich meets Godspeed you Black Emperor (without the guitars).

Desire As  performed by Prefab Sprout  1985

Steve McQueen is an almost faultless pop album. The first five or so tracks are quite awesome. Desire As comes in later down the album play list and it's got a lovely laid back groove. It builds slowly and Paddy McAloon's vocals are sweet. It's a nice track, make no mistake.

15 Mar 04 ·Mike: I love Prefab Sprout and Paddy is a great songwriter. Having said this, I do think I would love the band and their output even more were Paddy's vocals LESS SWEET! I mean, just about everything in their entire output seems to be bathed in honey, syrup, or treacle from his sugar-lined voicebox.
13 Jul 05 ·kkkerplunkkk: Yes but isn't that the point of Prefab Sprout? That it was the sweetest pop you could taste. The best love song writer I've ever heard.
Flugufrelsarinn  performed by Sigur Ros  2000

Some of the albums I like are good - a select few are really fabulous. This track comes from a fabulous album. Mirroring Slowdive's early 1990s soundscapes, Icelandic post-rockers Sigur Ros blend marimba, orchestra and effect-laiden guitar to create amazing tunes. Flugufrelsarinn is the pick - with a glorious multi-layered sound and an epic chorus. You must own this.

from Agaetis Byrjun (Fat Cat Records)
