The bands whose overall oeuvre I listen to most are Sigur Ros and Explosions in the Sky. I'm looking for individual song recommendations through this site. I plan to get each song through iTunes and I have a limited budget, so I'd really appreciate it if those of you who know current music very well would recommend some tracks.
Here are my favorite songs of the past few years. I don't listen to more than one song from some of these artists, but all of these songs I like because of the combination of melody and instrumentation. Lyrics are somewhat secondary.
The Postal Service - Such Great Heights
Dave Matthews - Some Devil
Coldplay - Don't Panic
Modest Mouse - Trailer Trash and Edit the Sad Parts
Bjork - Crying and Human Behavior
Dave Matthews Band - Two Step (and many others)
Orange Range - Asterisk (aka the opening theme to the show Bleach in its first season or so)
And my new favorite song is Lake Michigan by Rogue Wave.
I'd love a good Snow Patrol rec, as I've heard a good deal about them but I've never listened to their music.
Other bands I listen to include R.E.M. (pre-1998), Radiohead, Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Pavement, and classic southern rock and blues artists like the Allman Bros., Lynyrd Skynyrd, Muddy Waters, the Beatles (experimental work mostly), and Led Zeppelin.
