Life is White  performed by Big Star  1974
Recommended by popgoestheculture [profile]

This song spits at you with great Chilton guitar and vocal. Great harmonica too.

from Radio City, available on CD (Ardent)

13 Jul 05 ·kkkerplunkkk: Cool stuff, and check out Chris Bell's solo album and hear the other great songwriting genius from Big Star.
Lark’s tongues in aspic parts 1 & 2  performed by King Crimson  1974
Recommended by Maximum_Bygraves [profile]

ok, so it's two tracks, and can't really be called a song, very prog in its construction, real whisper to a scream stuff and some of Robert Fripps finest work, lyrical and savage. Fantasticaly clean production as well. Reminds me of slint. the marimba intro to the first track's a bit unneccesary though.

A Really Good Time  performed by Roxy Music  1974
Recommended by robert[o] [profile]

I know, one is supposed to defer to the Eno-epoch Roxy Music, (and the first two LPs are the end of the world), but this may well be the band's most serene momment. Bryan Ferry is at the top his game here - his vocals are heavenly, his lyrics are brilliantly/brutally witty. Add the floating layers of "Melody Nelson" damaged strings and the effect is dazzling.

from Country Life, available on CD (Virgin)

21 Jun 04 ·kath: "all the things you used to do.. a trip to the movies, a drink or two...they don't satisfy you, they don't tell you anything new" perfect song by Roxy at its very height... please keep your recommendations coming, Roberto.
The House Song  performed by Scott Walker  1974
Recommended by callgirlscene [profile]

This has a country-western kind of swing to it - the type of song Waylon Jennings might do. It seems to be about selling a house full of precious memories. Scott manages to sound like a really cool Elvis Presley, that is, with a swagger Elvis had but without Elvis's annoying mannerisms. For me, Scott's forte has been moody ballads, but he shows here that he can pull off country western too.

from WE HAD IT ALL (Philips)
available on CD - stretch/we had it all (BGO)

Joublie La Pluie Et Le Soleil  performed by Mireille Mathieu  1974
Recommended by eftimihn [profile]

Here's another recommendation from the great third "Canto Morricone" compilation. After Milva, Mireille Mathieu was the second artist to record a whole album of Morricone songs and this song was no rearrangement of a film song but exclusivley penned by Morricone for Mathieu and also conducted by Il Maestro himself. Mathieu is in excellent form here and the arrangement is as good as you'd expect from Morricone. Bear Family Records did a fantastic job here, including 7 songs by Mathieu, 4 of them have previously only been available on singles, two of these songs, "Nata libera" and "Quando verranno i giorni" were even transfered from vinyl since the original mastertapes couldn't be retrieved. Kudos to Bear Family Records for this great effort.

from Mireille Mathieu / Ennio Morricone (General Music)
available on CD - Canto Morricone Vol.3 - The 70s (Bear Family Records)
