One Cylinder  performed by Lou Donaldson  1967
Recommended by tinks [profile]

Hoo-wee!! Absolutely smoking soul-jazz from altoist Donaldson with some help from Lonnie Smith on Hammond & George Benson (pre-"On Broadway") on guitar. Leo Morris on drums and Melvin Lastie on cornet round out the quintet.

from Alligator Boogaloo, available on CD (Blue Note)

96 Tears  performed by Big Maybelle  1967
Recommended by tinks [profile]

Searing r&b cover of the ? & the Mysterians classic. Maybelle almost sounds like she singing this about somebody else, and like she's amused by the pain she's caused. I know it's been comped a number of times, but I'm not sure of where.

from the single 96 Tears (Rojac 112)

  30 Jun 03 ·shaka_klaus: nice one.
Nao Bate O Coroao  performed by Astrud Gilberto  1967
Recommended by tinks [profile]

A lovely version of this Deodato-penned number, and it's one that truly swings. Plus, it's got those ba-da-dum vocals that I love more than life itself!

from Beach Samba, available on CD (Verve)

01 May 01 ·delicado: I love this one too! Definitely one of Astrud's groovier tracks. This track also be found on one of the excellent 'Mojo club' compilations from Germany.
The Chelsea Memorandum  performed by Lalo Schifrin  1967
Recommended by tinks [profile]

I'm a sucker for Hammond organs. And no place is that more true than in spy tv & film scores. Here is a cut which really swings from one of the genre's masters, Lalo Schifrin.

from More Mission: Impossible (Paramount)
available on CD - Mission: Anthology (One Way)

07 Dec 05 ·Swinging London: Groovy! Groovy! Groovy! What else can I say...what else could anyone say?
Zoom  performed by Francis Lai  1967
Recommended by tinks [profile]

Killer organ-laden soundtrack cut with a wordless vocal provided by a male chorus, and featuring the incessant cackling of a young Candace Bergen.

from Live for Life (United Artists)
available on CD - A Man and a Woman/Live for Life (DRG)

21 Sep 01 ·tempted: Yes! I've played this in my dj sets several times. Its character and the sense of comedy, not to mention the grooviness, makes it a great "interlude" between some, er, more serious songs.
24 Sep 01 ·tinks: it's a staple in my dj sets, as well! glad to see that others have picked up on it, also!
